How to Wear a Quarter-Zip Sweater: A Men's Guide for Fall

The quarter-zip spent years as the sweater of golf courses and dress-down Fridays. This fall it has broken out of both. It turns up across the season's menswear trend roundups, and it's being styled less like a corporate uniform and more like a real wardrobe staple: over T-shirts, with straight-leg denim and tailored trousers, under a wool coat.

The appeal is practical. A zip-neck knit sits exactly between a crewneck and a cardigan. Zipped up, it's neat and covered. Zipped down, it shows a collar or a tee and reads relaxed. One sweater, two levels of formality, adjusted in a second. Here's how to get it right.

Quarter-zip, half-zip, zip-neck: what's the difference?

Mostly naming. A true quarter-zip has a short zip that stops just below the collarbone; a half-zip runs a little lower, toward the chest. The terms get used interchangeably, and in practice the difference matters less than two other details:

  • The collar. A stand or mock collar that holds its shape when zipped up is what makes the sweater look sharp. A soft, floppy collar folds over and looks tired by lunch.
  • The zip length. A shorter zip looks cleaner over a T-shirt. A longer one opens wider and leaves room for a shirt collar underneath.

A full-zip is a different garment. It behaves like a light jacket, not a sweater. This guide is about the pullover.

Get the fit right first

The quarter-zip is a simple piece, which means fit does all the work. Three checks:

  • Shoulders: the seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, or just past it if you want a relaxed look. Well past it and the whole sweater looks borrowed.
  • Length: the hem should land a couple of inches below your belt. Enough to cover the waistband when you raise your arms, short enough that it doesn't bunch over your seat.
  • Body: room to layer a shirt underneath without pulling across the chest. If you can see the outline of a shirt pocket through the knit, size up.

The silhouette is leaning looser this year: relaxed, not oversized. If you're between sizes and plan to wear a collared shirt underneath, take the larger one.

Pick the fabric for where you'll wear it

Fabric decides whether a quarter-zip reads office or weekend.

  • Fine merino or wool blend. Smooth, thin and the dressiest option. It layers under a coat or blazer without bulk and is the version to wear to work. The Capri merino wool zip sweater is this type: a half-zip in 100% merino, in gray, black, beige and navy.
  • Cable knit. Heavier and more textured. It's an outer layer on a cool afternoon and the most autumnal of the options. The Soren zipped cable sweater comes in burgundy and beige as well as the usual neutrals.
  • Corduroy. Not a knit, but it does the same job with more structure. Corduroy is one of the fabrics of the season, and the Varenna corduroy half-zip puts it into this shape with a stand collar that holds up.
  • Plain knit. The everyday version, easy to wear with everything. The Lombardi classic half-zip is the one to start with if you don't own one yet.

Skip shiny performance fabrics if you want it to look like a sweater rather than gym kit. The full range, from merino to cable to fleece, is in zip sweaters.

What to wear underneath

This is where most quarter-zip outfits succeed or fail, because the open collar frames whatever sits below it.

  • A crew-neck T-shirt in white, ecru or gray is the cleanest option. Keep the neckline tight so it lies flat under the zip. A stretched-out tee ruins it.
  • An Oxford or button-down shirt makes it smart-casual. Keep the shirt collar inside the sweater collar rather than folded out over it, and leave the zip partly open so the collar has room.
  • A fine turtleneck or mock neck is for colder weeks. Zip the sweater down far enough that the two collars don't stack.

What doesn't work: a polo underneath (two collars competing for the same space) and a hoodie (the hood pushes the zip collar out of shape).

Three outfits that work

The office version. A merino quarter-zip in navy or gray, a white button-down underneath, tailored trousers and leather loafers. Pleated trousers like the Pasini pleated tapered trousers balance the softer top half and make the whole outfit look deliberate rather than dressed-down.

The weekend version. A cotton or corduroy half-zip, a plain tee, straight-leg denim or cords, and sneakers or suede boots. Corduroy on corduroy works as long as the colors differ: a sage half-zip over brown cord trousers, say. There's a good choice of both in men's pants. Keep the shoe simple.

The cold-weather version. A cable quarter-zip, a tee or fine turtleneck underneath, wool trousers and a coat on top. The quarter-zip is one of the best sweaters to wear under a coat, because its collar fills the gap at the neck where a crewneck leaves you exposed to the wind. A coat that falls just below the hip, like the Adriano Signature Overcoat, covers the sweater hem and keeps the proportions clean. More shapes are in men's coats.

Color: start neutral, then add one

Navy, gray and camel do most of the work and go with everything you already own. Once you have one of those, the second quarter-zip is where color comes in. This season's trend reports point to chocolate brown and ochre; burgundy and olive are easier autumn alternatives. All four sit well against denim and gray trousers. If you only buy one, navy is the hardest to get wrong.

Pattern: a subtle stripe or a textured knit, yes. Big logos or contrast piping around the zip, no. That's exactly what drags the quarter-zip back to the golf course.

Zipped up or down?

A simple rule: zip it to the collar when there's a T-shirt underneath or when you're outdoors and cold; leave it a few inches open over a shirt collar or a turtleneck. Fully open with the collar flopped to the sides looks careless. The zip is there to adjust, not to be left at the bottom.

The short version

Buy for fit before fabric, keep the collar sharp, choose a fine knit for work and a textured one for weekends, and keep whatever's underneath simple. Get those right and the quarter-zip becomes the most useful sweater you own from October to March.

Everything above, from knitwear to trousers and coats, is in the men's Fall Drop. Pieces are already marked down, and buying more than one takes an extra 15% off two items, an extra 20% off three and an extra 25% off four.
