How to Set an Italian Table at Home

An Italian table looks effortless because it follows a few simple habits, not a rulebook. There are no place cards and no six forks. What it has instead is a good cloth, plates that feel like they belong together, glasses that catch the light and enough food to share. Here's how to set one at home.

Start with the cloth

A tablecloth instantly makes a meal feel like an occasion. Natural tones — white, khaki, sage, light gray — work with any plates and any season. Let it hang generously over the edges; a cloth that stops at the table's edge looks like an afterthought. A water-resistant finish means you can leave it on all week.

That's exactly why we chose the Toscana tablecloth: a natural-looking cotton blend with a water-resistant finish, so wine and olive oil wipe away. For special dinners, the Lino pure linen tablecloth brings the real linen drape. Finish with the Lucca hemstitched napkins.

Mix, don't match

Italian tables are rarely set with one perfectly matching service. Combine plain white plates with one patterned piece — a bowl, a serving plate, a cup and saucer — and the table looks collected rather than bought in one go.

Our pick for that one patterned piece: the Ischia hand-painted ceramic bowls, each in a different pattern in the colors of the Italian coast. For olives and dips, the Maiolica dipping dishes do the same job on a smaller scale.

Glasses: one for water, one for wine

Keep it to two glasses per person. A simple tumbler for water and a stemmed glass for wine. If you love a cocktail before dinner, serve the aperitivo away from the table, then move to the meal.

For the wine, we selected the Barbera tulip wine glass for its ultra-thin glass and generous bowl, and the Rosa blush pink glasses if you want a little color. For the aperitivo, the Negroni cocktail shaker set has everything you need.

Put the food in the middle

Family style is the heart of it. Serve pasta, salad and bread on large plates in the center and let everyone help themselves. It feels generous and keeps conversation flowing.

The pieces we chose for the middle of the table: the Bosco solid wood serving board for bread and cheese, the Forno ceramic baking bowl that goes straight from the oven to the table, and the Paniere rattan bread basket.

Add something living

A few lemons in a bowl, a sprig of olive, one small vase of flowers. Keep it low so people can see each other across the table.

The Fruttiera wire fruit bowl was made for those lemons, and a few Goccia mini glass bud vases keep the flowers low, exactly as they should be.

Finish with candlelight

As the light goes, add two or three taper candles in simple metal holders. It's the single detail that turns dinner into a long evening.

Go for the Vittoria taper candle holders in polished metal with the Cera tall taper candles. Want something more playful? The Sanremo ribbed glass taper holders come in three heights.
